Winter Garden

(click on title to read entire post and comments)
I am so so proud of my husband, the engineer!! Look at what he built for the garden so that we can have yummy salad and herbs (almost) all winter long!

It's a cold frame constructed from two Freecycled storm doors and $12 worth of untreated wood. So far, we've had two frosty nights, and the plants have stayed nice and toasty inside the frame while almost everything else outside has died. The temperature inside seems to run consistently 10 degrees warmer than the outside (except when the sun is shining - it shot up to almost 80 degrees today and I had to prop the door open!).

I brought in some of my kale plants and re-potted them so that we can keep munching those throughout the winter as well. Gardening is too much fun to give up for the cold months! I'm thinking of maybe even starting another tomato plant or two inside with the kale - who knows, maybe I'll have better luck with tomatoes in pots.
