I'm keeping it short and sweet this week - gotta watch the 'lympics!! So during this challenge we will watch how much electricity we use. July and August are usually the most expensive months for our electric bill, so we will try to make sure lights get switched off when they are not needed, run the AC only when necessary, and run big appliances only one at a time (ie. not running the dishwasher and the microwave and the toaster oven all while the coffee is brewing and I am blow drying my hair [whoa - don't worry, we usually aren't THAT bad, but you get the point]). Also, since anything with an AC adaptor attached to it (like cell phone chargers, computers, etc) draws a small "phantom" amount of power even when switched off, I will try to keep certain things unplugged when we're not using them. Here is an article with some good tips.
See results for Crunchy Challenge No. 6: Green the air here. By the way, my ideas for further challenges have kind of fizzled out. I would have done bike to work next, but a) I'm not working now and b) I would have to take Masha along, and babies can't ride in bike seats until 12 months of age. Anyone have any other challenges they would like to see us do?

We ended up hardly running the AC at all this week, and it really wasn't that bad. It helped to keep the curtains drawn at all times on the south side of the house. I don't think it's very feasible to go around each night unplugging the computers and TVs, etc., but I will probably power down my computer more often now than I did before.
