Match Day

(click on title to read entire post and comments)
Today was Match Day at the College of Medicine - the day when all the seniors finally find out where they will be spending the next years (at least 3) of their lives as they complete the last phase of their medical training, residency. The trail to Match Day is a long and arduous one, usually involving multiple treks across the country to interview at various programs of the applicant's choice. After this, applicants and residency programs submit their electronic "rank lists" of preferred programs and applicants, respectively, and then a computer analyzes everything and spits out the results, hopefully matching each resident with a program of their preference. Luckily I didn't have to deal with the stress of this suspenseful process - since all Match residency programs start in July, and since I want to take maternity leave until January, I have accepted a position subsequent to the match. I will be staying here at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City to complete my residency in Family Medicine. See the press release and where the rest of my classmates matched.
